The proper framing of Model Context Protocol is backwards: it's not that AI requires MCP to work, it's that MCP becomes viable only because LLMs can act as the flexible integration layer between applications. Before MCP, every app-to-app integration required hand-mapping one domain to another (GitHub issue → Todoist task), which didn't scale. MCP standardizes the interface so the LLM does the translation dynamically, letting any app expose tools in the same structure regardless of which AI host calls them.
