A truly portable vault stores every note as .md, every canvas as .canvas JSON, and uses links instead of embedded attachments. Storing attachments inside the vault creates binary blobs that break the plain-text guarantee and bloat storage. The link-out approach keeps the vault itself a collection of portable text files that can be migrated, version-controlled in git, or fed to AI agents as-is.
