Matter Is a Hierarchy: Atoms Build Molecules, Molecules Build Compounds

The ontology of matter stacks neatly: atoms are the building blocks, molecules are bonded groups of atoms, and compounds are the substances made from those molecules. Each level has emergent properties the level below does not — atoms have no chemical identity of their own in combination, molecules do.
